Right, so I was looking at all of my books today and I realized that I've a tonne of non-fiction books I have but haven't read yet. There's also loads of non-fiction books that I want to read but haven't got. So, I'm setting myself a challenge.Between now and Christmas, I have to read...
1. At least 3 books and several zines related to feminism.
2. At least 4 books and lots of zines about anarchism.
3. At least 2 biographies/autobiographies.
4. Min. 5 non-fiction books that aren't related to anarchism/feminism.
Here are some of the books I'll read and I'll add more as I go along.
Anarchism.
1. The ABC of Anarchism by Alexander Berkman
Autobiography/biography
1. Living My Life by Emma Goldman
2. Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life by Jon Lee Anderson
Other non-fiction
1. Civil Disobedience and Other Essays: Collected Essays of Henry David Thoreau
2. This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession by Daniel Levitin
3. Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance by Noam Chomsky
Feminism.
I don't know yet, but suggestions are more than welcome.
Wow, this does sound like an awesome challenge. I almost never read non-fiction, so I know exactly what you mean. For the feminist books, have you read Cunt: A Declaration of Independence? It's a little crazy, kind of basic, and very short and sweet, but I really enjoyed it.
For other non-fiction, I recommend A Short History of Nearly Everything. It's one of my favorite books ever.
I have a bunch of feminist non-fiction on my to read list. Here's a few: Nobody Passes: Rejecting the Rules of Gender and Conformity by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, Feminism Is for Everybody: Passionate Politics by bell hooks, Bitches, Bimbos, and Ballbreakers: The Guerrilla Girls' Illustrated Guide to Female Stereotypes and The Guerrilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art by Guerrilla Girls, and of course The Second Sex. I don't know too many zines, but I can recommend Hoax (http://hoaxzine.tumblr.com/) as a good one. Sounds like a great challenge, good luck!
Thanks for all of the suggestions guys!I've read two feminist zines so far:
1. Raise Some Hell: A Feminist Child Rearing Zine for Everyone.Published by the CRAP (Child Rearing Against Patriarchy) Collective.
2.A Zine About Womens Self Defence. Don't know who published it.
Both zines were excellent. It was fantastic reading about feminist mothers trying to figure out how to rear their kids, and the self defence zine was fantastic, very useful!
